Young Goodman Brown
In the short story “Young Goodman Brown”, the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the main character (Goodman Brown) to depict his own beliefs that mankind is naturally inclined to evil. Goodman Brown, a religious leader in his community decides to meet with the devil in an attempt to defeat evil on his own. Along the way the author shows many changes in Goodman Brown, going from a man of faith and leadership to having no faith and complete bewilderment. ... The Goodman Brown that left to run an “errand” was not the same Goodman that returned home a day later. ... Young Goodman Brown is a story full of allegory and one of the prime examples is Goodman’s excuse for being late to his meeting with the devil when he says, “Faith kept me back awhile.
