People have always been misunderstood. It doesn’t matter where in history people have been and are misunderstood. When people are different or they don’t fit in, if they don’t do what they are supposed to do, people don’t understand them. That only makes a person more of an outsider. Paul was very misunderstood. for the time he lived in. He didn’t have to be so misunderstood. Maybe if he lived in the present day, He might not have had such a difficult time begin part of society. It is extremely hard for a person to be them self when no one agrees or supports them. That’s why paul felt like he had to escape. Paul was a dreamer. He wanted to be part of a life style of riches and glamor when it wasn’t really possible for someone his age unless he was born into it. Nobody understood that, or him. But he really didn’t want to be part of the life he was born into anywise so he didn’t try. He chose to be the outsider. He showed it in how he acted towards his teachers and everyone around him. He demonstrates this many ways, Like in the quote: “I don’t know, “ he replied. “ I didn’t mean to be polite or impolite, either. I guess it’s a sort of way I have of saying things regardless.”( 222) This was one of the responses he gave in the meeting with all of his teachers when they were considering suspending him. He didn’t try to follow their standards, or fit in. He was just being himself, and he didn’t care how anyone else took it. Paul was constantly filling his world with activities to distract him from real life. He ushered at the music hall in his town, he lost himself in paintings, and made himself and familiar in his local theater house among the actors. He didn’t really aspire to be a painter, musician, actor. He just wanted to be part of the life that surrounded those activities. Those activities were luxuries for people who were wealthy.
