Giuseppe Tornatore uses several techniques to create a paradise for Toto in the movie Cinema Paradiso. Toto is in need of a refuge from his home. His mother is constantly blaming things on him and beating him because she has lost her husband and Toto’s father in World War II. Tornatore uses setting and characterization to make the paradise that Toto creates come to life in the movie. Toto needs a place to escape to, outside of his home and church, so he can feel free from his mother and his life. Toto has a passion for movies, he uses them as an escape, but watching them isn’t enough for him. He wants to know how the movies work and how they are made. Toto is sneaky and always finds a way to creep up to the movie booth and watch Alfredo, the projectionist, work. Tornatore creates a setting that is a perfect escaping place for Toto. The projection room is at the top of creepy, old spiral stairs that give the feeling that a gem is hidden atop them. The room itself is covered with movie strips and shipping orders and is dominated by the reel projector perched in the middle of the mess.
