Learning a Second Language Speech topic: We should support the learning of a second language. General purpose: To persuade. Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to support the learning of a second language. Thematic Statement: People should learn a second language or support that idea because of three reasons; first, it brings cultural development; second, it helps you in your career; third, it is easy to learn a new language these days. Introduction I. How many of you speak a second language? Are you a fluent speaker? What language? II. There are two main reasons why I chose this topic. First, because I believe in the idea of learning a second language. Second, because I am fluent in two languages, Portuguese (first language) and English. Also, I have good understanding of Spanish, and I have taken three years of French in high school, although I do not remember much. III. This is important to you, my audience, because the learning of a second language could be important for your future in your career. IV. People should learn a second language or support that idea because of three reasons; first, it brings cultural development; second, it helps you in your career; third, it is easy to learn a new language these days. Transition: The first reason why I think people should learn a second language is because it brings cultural development. Body I. Learning a second language is important because it brings cultural development. A. Second language learning is often second culture learning (Brown). B. Cultural patterns, customs, and ways of life are expressed in language; culture-specific worldviews are reflected in language (Brown). C. In order to understand just what second culture learning is, one needs to understand the nature of acculturation, culture shock, and social distance (Brown).
