Assertive Assignment Conversation #1: There was an issue between my roommate and me. She left the dishes in the sink for quite a while and I felt really angry about it since it didn’t smell well and I felt uncomfortable to invite my friends. I approached her with the direct statement describing my feelings caused by her action. She didn’t respond immediately thinking how to behave and what to answer. She sounded surprised and defensive at the same time. She explained that the washing machine has been broken for a couple of days and she left me a note on the table saying that I should go to maintenance office on the way to school. Her tone was direct and a bit rough, now she blamed me in delaying my visit to the maintenance office. By changing my tone and showing her that I didn’t mean to argue with her, actually helped me to set the conversation into a different mode. By letting her know that I didn’t notice the note and saying that the whole situation was an unspoken misunderstanding brought us into a completely different level of the conversation.
