I decided to attend Mrs. Burks presentation on daphnia in shallow ponds. She proceeded to tell how she has done much research on daphnia. Daphnia is a freshwater animal that is easy to perform research on. These animals are easy to keep in lab areas and also help promote clear water states. Daphnia has two different ways to avoid predators in their environment. They either migrate horizontally or vertically in the pond. The vertical movement is labeled DVM. This type of predator avoidance tends to occur in large ponds due to the fact that these ponds are deep enough for the daphnia to move up or down when predators are around. The horizontal movement is labeled DHM. This type of predator avoidance tends to occur in small ponds due to the fact that these ponds aren’t deep enough for the daphnia to avoid the predator horizontally.
