WW1 – Sarajevo, June 28, 1914. Archduke Franz assassinated by a Serbian terrorist who is a part of the “Black Hand” Nationalism – Serbia wanted to reunite with Bosnia after Austria-Hungary annexed it in 1908, the “Black Hand” wanted union. Alliances Triple Entente = France, Russia, Britain (the allies). Triple Alliance = Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary (central powers). Imperialism – gaining colonies away from the home country and building huge empires (raw materials, markets, power, glory) Militarism – the belief in the power of strong armies to decide issues. Believe no one attacks a strong nation. This led to “Arms race” Canada had entered WW1 as a colony of Britain with no say over its own foreign affairs.
