Female Genital Mutilation

After all the research I have come across this is my report on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). There are many variations of FGM which are practiced throughout the world. However, they can be roughly grouped into three forms: a) sunna, b) excision and c) infibulation. The sunna (Arabic for "tradition") is the removal of the clitoral prepuce, the outer layer of skin over the clitoris, sometimes called the "hood"; the glans and body of the clitoris remain intact. This is the only form of FGM than can accurately be called "circumcision" and it is anatomically equivalent to male circumcision. Which removes the foreskin of the penis. The second form, excision, is more severe and involves the removal of all or part of the clitoris as well as part or all of the labia minora (inner lips). Stitches may be applied to stop the bleeding. After the surgery, the clitoris is absent, but the urethra and vaginal introitus are not covered. The most severe form of FGM is infibulation or Pharaonic circumcision. In this process the entire clitoris and labia minora as well as much or most of the labia majora (outer lips) are cut or scraped away.
