Jazz, is a novel about adultery and betrayal, yet being able to find and rekindle an existing love between husband and wife. The novel revolves around a love triangle between Joe Trace, his wife Violet, and his mistress, a young girl named Dorcas. Joe first sees Dorcas at a candy, and later, while selling cosmetics to her Aunt Alice, Joe finds out the girl’s name and from that day forward Joe finds salvation from his failing marriage in Dorcas. After renting a room from a neighbor, Joe and Dorcas continue their affair by meeting in this room weekly for about three months, where they would discuss their childhoods, provide comfort in each other’s lives, and make love. Although Joe and Dorcas seem to have a blooming love for one another, eventually the eighteen year old Dorcas realizes that she prefers the affection and attention of a young, handsome man named to Acton, to the love and attention of Joe. Dorcas meets with Joe one last time and tells him, although harshly, that she no longer wishes to see him. Due to his failing and lonely marriage with Violet, Joe does not quite know how to deal with the break up.
