“Christian Symbolism in Blade Runner” The movie “Blade Runner” employs Christian symbolism. First, two of the movie’s characters seem to represent “Christ” figures. The first character who appears to symbolize Christ is J.F. Sebastian. Just as Christ attempted to bring humanity to God and was killed by those he sought to save, Sebastian attempted to bring Batty to his creator, Tyrell and, like Christ, was murdered as a result of his efforts. Another character that resembles Christ is Batty. Batty is Tyrell’s “son” and Tyrell is the maker of the Replicants (as God was man’s creator). Moreover, Batty comes back to earth from another world, just as Christ did. In an obvious reference to the crucifixion, Batty drives a nail through his palm. Significantly, a white dove is released in the climactic scene between Batty and Deckard, a clear reference to peace and perhaps a symbol of Christ’s ascension.
