Throughout the story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Charlotte Gilman focuses on the character Jane who is confined to a colonial mansion for the summer with temporary nervous depression. The story takes the form of a journal of Jane, in which she becomes deeply preoccupied with the influence of her surrounding environment. Further in the story, the elements of the setting seem to fade in importance and the strange wallpaper in her room slowly takes their place. The illusion of the mysterious woman stuck in the wallpaper symbolizes Jane and her desire to escape for independence. Jane secretly writes in her journal expressing her thoughts. Her husband, John, does not know that she does this and would hate it if he were to find out.
