... This way of conceiving facts is well depicted in this short story, “The Little Dirty Girl” written by Joanna Russ. In this story which is in an epistolary form, a middle aged woman describes how she has been haunted by a little girl. Precisely, the apparition of this little girl in the narrator’s life enables her to rediscover her inner self and to reconsider the relation she has with her mother. ... We can easily say that she is disconnected from the outside world, until the day she meets the little dirty girl. She knows right away that this girl is different but could not explain. ... After her meeting with the little dirty girl, the lifestyle of the narrator changes. It does not only entertain the little dirty girl but it also makes her go out, which is good because moreover, she looks happier. ... So I decided that this time I would be openly angry…”The little dirty girl has a very big influence upon the narrator and her view of this world.
In the second place, another way in which the little dirty girl has an influence on the narrator is that she makes her learn how to act as a mother and to love and care for someone. At the beginning, we know that she is not only mean to kitties but she also dislike little boys. ... She gradually learns to take care of the little dirty girl by giving her bath, dressing her, feeding her, combing her, in other words, things a mother should provide to their children. “Once, feeling we had become friends enough for it, I ran her a bath and put her clothes through the basement washer-dryer…” Afterward, when the relation between the narrator and the little dirty girl is very strong and that narrator realizes that she does care and love the little dirty girl, she makes her a promise to give her all she needs.
