Comparing the practices of Elder care in the native Americans History, to the Elder care in the United Sates Today, I found that in the past the Native Americans had a system that worked better and is more humane. They treated their elderly with respect for the wisdom they had acquired; they were active within their families. Elderly Native Americans were still included in the family, its culture and still had responsibilities in teaching history, and religion. ... Budget cuts in elderly service cause many people over age sixty-five to rely on their families. ... elderly over age sixty are worried about physically caring for themselves. ... ” (Berthrong)
Elder care is clearly a rapidly growing phenomenon, especially for baby boomers, those now 39 to 57. Many families are adding elder care responsibilities during the same time that they are raising their children, becoming members of the “sandwich generation”, facing both elder care and child care demands that drain their energy and require their time and resources.
