Youth Criminal Justice Act Assignment 1. The purpose of the revised Youth Criminal Justice Act is to try to make the guilty person able to successfully rehabilitate into the society without re offending. This is achieved through, the increasing use of non-court measures for less serious offenses, the reduced use of youth courts for less serious cases, they enable the youth courts to focus on more serious cases, they provide support to police in their exercise of discretion, and they re-orient system’s approach ti non-court measures so they are viewed as the normal, expected and most appropriate response to less serious youth offenses. The types of offences that are covered under this law may vary. It all depends if the courts deem that the matter that is at hand is in need of adult sentencing, or not. Usually this act covers summary offences like shoplifting, or assault. The sentences that can be given out by the court for offences (summary) can be at the most up to 3 years unless there is a special circumstance. The police can issue warnings, cautions, and referrals to community programs, where as the crown attorney can only issue cautions. The age limits on sentencing under the Y.O.A is that the charged must be under the age of 18 to be tried as a young offender. This effects the type of sentences that one receives, because as long as a person did not commit murder, their sentences will tend to be more lenient, then those of the same sentence for adults. This also helps the record matter, because no perspective employer is allowed to see/ know that their perspective employee had a previous conviction.
