When one goes over the list of the most influential African American leaders in the 1950’s and 1960’s, Malcolm X can not be forgotten. ... Malcolm transformed from a young street criminal to one of the most successful and influential black leaders today.
Born in Omaha , Nebraska, Malcolm entered the world and was destined to a great leader. Growing up was hard for Malcolm X because he faced many different hardships during his childhood. Raised in Lansing, Michigan, Malcolm witnessed his house being burned to the ground by the infamous white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan. Recently following, Malcolm’s father was found murdered in the streets because he had gotten run over by a street car. Malcolm’s father was a follower of Marcus Garvey and he believed this is why the whites wanted to kill him and that his death was closely related to an act of racial hatred by the whites. Two years after, his father was murdered and this resulted in Malcolm’s mother being placed in a mental institution. As a result of his parent’s circumstances, Malcolm spent the next several years in and out of detention centers and foster homes and was discouraged to do better because of racial prejudices. ... Following that, Malcolm stumbled along some trouble and was convicted for burglary and sent to jail. ... Malcolm went to Nation of Islam headquarters in Chicago, met the leader, Elijah Muhammad, when he was released from prison in 1952.
