1.) Philosophy: Pick two apposing authors and define their definitions of Self, Mind, and Body. Then Compare the two, and choose which ones you most agree with. David Hume argues, that our mind are always flowing that we don’t have reason to believe that the self or soul exist (20). He argues that the reason why we think or have our own thoughts is because we get all of our thoughts from someone or something else. Hume believes that our self or “identity” which is what he calls it is that we do not have one. Hume refers to himself as “myself”, he suggests that “myself” always perceives something all the time, and “myself” can never see anything but what he perceives (22). He can never see what he wants to see, he can only see what is shown to him, but when he is sleeping, Hume believes that he can not perceive anything, he cant think, he is not conscious of the world around him (22). This brings him to the statement that, when you are dead you are dead (22). You can’t see, love or anything. So when your body is completely removed of these sensations you will be completely destroyed. This means that Hume believes that your soul, “identity” does not carry on after death. Your “identity” is as dead as you are. Hume also believes that mankind is nothing but a whole bunch of people with different perceptions, which are too many, that are lost forever, that are too complicated to understand (22). Hume compares humans to a ship (23). Hume says that if you change something on the ship many times, that the ship will not loose its identity, but its appearance. You can still identify the ship as a ship.
