Gay Marriages
Gays and lesbians have indeed come a long way, however they are still being denied some of the social rights heterosexuals have. “Over the past several decades, homosexuals have emerged as a group with a distinct political identity, and they have begun to seek civil-rights protection and great social acceptance” (“Gay Rights” 1). Gay-rights advocates are strengthening efforts to gain legal same-sex unions, but the campaign is drawing strong resistance from social conservatives. Gay and lesbian couples need and deserve the same symbolic and practical benefits for their relationships as enjoyed by heterosexuals” (Jost 1). Homosexuals did not choose to be the way they were, and they can be in love just like everyone else, therefore gays and lesbians should be allowed marriage. ... On June 10, 2003 a three-member panel of the Ontario Court of Appeals ordered that same-sex couples would be allowed marriage. “The Prime Minister indicated that the federal government would not appeal the Ontario court’s decision, and promised to legalize gay marriage nationwide” (“Ontario Court Legalizes” 1). By June 20, the city of Toronto alone had issued 175 marriage licenses to gay couples. ...
