comparison of the necklace and born failure
There seems to be quite a number of differences and similarities between Highsmith’s “Born Failure” and Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace. ... Winnie, the main character in “Born Failure” was a very humble and modest man. ... Along with that, the main character in “The Necklace,” Mathilde Loisel, and her husband, Monsieur Loisel, were also not very rich to begin with either. ... Throughout a good portion of “Born Failure,” the reader sees that Winnie really is a born failure. It is stated that “Some men are born to success… by fifty the thousands are gushing in… such was not Winthrop Hazlewood” (Highsmith 267). ... However, when she chooses jewelry, the only item she thought that was good enough for her was a single necklace that was made of paste: something that was as fraudulent as her. Another ironic point is that the objective that the main character in this story wanted to reach with her attendance at the ball, wearing an impressive necklace, was to be closer to that perfect life she often dreamt about.
