DAVID HOCKNEY AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO 20TH CENTURY ART Visual art practice is an aspect of society that has evolved significantly over an extensive period of time. This essay will be paying particular attention to the comments made by three authors on the artistic expression of the 20th century in main part to the photographic work of David Hockney. David Hockney is a British born artist who is seen by many as a major contributor to the evolution of 20th century art practice, more specifically within the genre of modern art. David Hockney has a reputation for being able to create artistic expression using varied mediums such as painting, printmaking, drawing and photography: many times working with mixed media. At times Hockney has found himself being compared to the likes of Andy Warhol, some even suggesting he would take his place, “ Andy Warhol is dead. Long live David Hockney. ... most visible artist passed from Waehol’s platinum wig to Hockney’s peroxide-blond bowl cut” (The 25 most intriguing people 1988). As an author himself of many theories, Hockney’s work has also been subject to fastidious analysis most of, which praises his artistic ability to withhold an audience. Three authors who acclaim success of Hockneys work are Philip Stokes( Scrabble Game 1983), Marco Livingstone( Demonstrations of versatility 1981) and Author C (Hockney, David 1998). It would appear that all three authors consider David Hockney as being one of a kind, “ truly, David Hockney is a wild card.
