In my English class I am currently writing an essay about Gay Marriage in the United States, this topic gave me a kernel of an idea for this essay. I’ve decided to look at an essay that was originally posted as an article in the Dallas Morning News. This article did not discuss gay marriage; however the essay does discuss another minority group issue using ethnic names for sport teams and mascots. Sticks and Stones and Sports Team Names by Richard Estrada is in my English book the The ST. Martin’s Guide to Writing. Richard Estrada wrote a syndicated column for the Dallas Morning News in which he first wrote Sticks and Stones and Sports Team Names in late October 1995 during the World Series. Richard Estrada is arguing on a topic that sparked controversy over the use of team mascots such as the Cleveland Indians and the Atlanta Braves, which is, consider by the Native Americans and other minority groups to be racist.
