Old South

The Old South A picture of a big white house on a plantation, dog wood and magnolia trees surrounding the house, the sun shining, and blue skies makes a person paint a picture of an old southern home. The south ,back when times moved at a slower pace, people took time to have breakfast at the table, go to church every Sunday, and just being lazy was priority number one. A person would never think of brutal racist murders would ever occur in such a peaceful place as the south. The song “Strange Fruit,” written by Abel Meeropol, performed by Nina Simone, an accomplished African American singer in the mid twentieth century, diminishes the fact that the south was anything but peaceful back in the early twentieth century. “Strange Fruit” takes a picture from the old south such as a magnolia tree and uses that picture to paint an entirely new picture.
