Americans’ perception of crime is not commonly based on personal experience and because of this the media plays a very important role in how we view crime. The media however does not always provide us with a realistic picture of crime statistics. Many Americans have a distorted idea of crime and the types of crime frequently committed. ... Many experts believe that the media is responsible for this, newspapers and television particularly. Many studies have been done on this phenomenon and the overwhelming result is that there is a gross misrepresentation of crime in the media. The media is after all a type of business and they have a tendency to print things that will sell more.
