A Good Man is Hard to Find After carefully reading, researching, and analyzing the characters, symbols and the theme within A Good Man is Hard to Find, the talent of one of the South’s most respected short story writers, Flannery O’Connor, becomes readily apparent. Flannery O’Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1925. She attended Catholic school and began writing in high school. She graduated from Mississippi State College, and at the age of 22, moved to New York to pursue her writing career. Just three years later, she was diagnosed with lupus and returned to Georgia to live with her mother. She grew up in the South, but did not want to be thought of as a regional writer. Though her stories usually took place in the South, she preferred to focus on spirituality, which is seen in each of her stories. She would often shock her readers by using violence to grab their attention, which many saw as a contrast to her quiet, personal life.
