... Mike Rose, an educator who studied this situation at the University of California, reviewed the way university policies affected these incoming students. Rose discovered several problem areas that were responsible for the students’ inadequacies, and described them in his article “The Politics of Remediation”. Nicholas Negroponte similarly observed young students in action. Negroponte, director of the Media Lab at MIT, gave students the opportunity to learn outside the normal classroom atmosphere. ... In Negroponte’s article “Hard Fun”, he illustrates the benefits of a modern, computerized educational climate. Nicholas Negroponte’s concept of learning with the aid of twentieth-century interactive technology would overcome the deficiencies in education that were uncovered by Mike Rose. In one of the problem areas Rose identified, critical literacy, computers can aid a student by the ease at which the student can compare, synthesize, and analyze his own work. ... Errors will continue, but Negroponte similarly shares the view of Mike Rose that errors should be viewed as a sign of growth. Negroponte states, “A major measure comes from exploration, from reinventing the wheel and finding out for oneself”(142). Negroponte exposed the benefits of exploration during a concours, or scavenger hunt. ... The more analytical students (Negroponte referred to them as street smart) would often outmaneuver the students who excelled in the typical classroom environment. Another troubling issue Mike Rose found was that many freshmen were not prepared for the university’s orientation towards inquiry.
