Salter now lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, Diane, and two daughters. II. This books setting ranges from the year 1906 to 1998. As the book begins, John recollects the days of his grandfather, with whom he was able to spend only limited time with. His grandfather, John Sidney McCain Senior, was an Admiral in the U.S. Navy where he set the standards early for John Sidney McCain Junior as well as for Senator McCain himself. The setting of John McCain’s life changed rapidly and increasingly more as he grew older. Being a son of an Admiral, John’s father was constantly being stationed in many different cities throughout the world where John and his mother followed always without regret. After attending countless high schools, John later attended the U.S. Naval Academy where he would give himself the reputation of being “an underachiever”. As John’s career in the Navy started to get off the ground so also did the Vietnamese negotiating war conflict.
