The areas of New England and the Chesapeake region differed greatly when the people of England primarily arrived. ... The colonies of New England consisted of Massachusetts Bay, Connecticut, Plymouth, etc. while the colonies of the Chesapeake region include Virginia and Maryland. Both these regions evolved into different entities due to a numerous catalog of reasons; New England was founded on a religious platform, had an overall compassionate attitude towards Indians, focused primarily on shipbuilding for industry, and had a closer family unit, whereas Chesapeake Bay was founded on an avid base, had poor relations with Indians as shown by Bacon’s Rebellion, had more plantation style economic base, and had a loose concept of family. ... The settlers of the New England colonies came to the “New World” to pursue their religious views and went there to settle permanently while the settlers of the Chesapeake colonies went there solely for economic interests and had planned to leave once they had made a considerable amount of money. More specifically, the residents of the Chesapeake region originally came for one substance, gold. ... To elaborate on the views of the English settlers of New England, John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony provides analysis on the issue of unity and emphasizes how unity would solve all problems posed onto the settlers. ... The Puritans of New England followed Calvinistic doctrine which enforced the concepts of predestination and the belief of the “elect. ... One final added note is that the Puritans came to New England as a community. ... Family traditions formed the basis of the community of New England. The settlers of the Chesapeake colonies were sent to America by companies to “get rich quick” by searching for gold. They came with the intention of going back to England and enjoy the newly found wealth. ... At one instance, the settlers even boarded a ship headed back for England, but their efforts were denied by an English Captain with the name of John Smith who forced them to either “stay or sink in the river” (Document F).
