October Sky In October Sky by Homer Hickam, Homer (also called Sonny) had many challenges to overcome. He and his four friends, Roy Lee, Quentin, O’Dell and Billy (the rocket boys) were inspired by the infamous scientist Dr.von Braun to build rockets. It was the 50’s and Russia had launched their first rocket into space. Overwhelmed with patriotism, the rocket boys decided to built their own rockets. They could not have succeeded with out the help from Reverend Lanier; Sonny’s father Homer, and the community. The rocket boys lived in Coalwood, a town were boys were ridiculed if they did not join their high school football team or worked for the mine. In a one minded town, the boys did not have any support. The Reverend was one of the most helpful persons who gave them support, and opened the doors for them.
