Abnormal Psychology Reaction 1 When studying psychology, it is necessary to look at important theorists in the field to understand how psychology has evolved. However, in modern times, I think that in many cases these theorists are outdated, and less emphasis should be placed on them. Sigmund Freud is a classic example that illustrates my belief. It is unnecessary to give him so much credit as there is no evidence to support his philosophies. Most of Freud’s theories surround the unconscious. The unconscious refers to beliefs that we are not aware of. If the people having these unconscious thoughts are not aware of them, how could Freud possibly be? Freud used the unconscious mind as an excuse to theorize whatever he wanted because it is impossible to know what occurs there.
