Bilingual Education

In Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez bilingual education is addressed as an important issue in American society. Rodriguez grew up going to a bilingual school, and he has strong feelings toward them. He believes that bilingual education is not in the student’s best interests. He does not like that type of education because he thinks that it is less efficient than if the student were just to learn in an English classroom. I agree with Rodriquez view that bilingual education is not in the student’s best interest. Bilingual education is defined as using two languages in some proportion in order to facilitate learning by students who have a native proficiency in one language and are acquiring proficiency in the other. ... With the loss of bilingual education the student is no longer educated in his language, culture, and most importantly, native background.
