The Greeks base their lives off the Golden Mean. The golden mean is all things in moderation to humankind. The golden mean was mans obligation to himself and his society and to his gods/goddess. Mortals must strive for excellence or aręte, excessive excellence could lead to hybris, and temporary madness was ate. Aręte was striving for excellence in mythological times. In today’s society, people strive for excellence all the time, in sports or education. In the story Prometheus, he was striving for excellence by helping the humans to have good food and fire to cook the food. A quote out of the myth Prometheus was “The father of the gods demands that you declare the secret knowledge that will destroy him Pg 107.” The myth of Arachne was about a woman who was striving for excellence in weaving.
