Hate, love, loyalty, and betrayal are all qualities that derive from one character trait that all humans’ possess: jealousy. The tragedy of Othello the Moor of Venice By William Shakespeare is centered on this destructive emotion, and almost all of the characters display this emotion in one way or another.

Iagos hatred toward Othello is prompted by his jealousy of Cassios’ appointed position as lieutenant. The jealousy that Iago harbors towards Cassio and Othello triggers the events in this drama that lead to the final tragedy in this play.
