THE CAUSES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
The First Global War was brought about by a number of different and rather complex factors. In an attempt to identify and as a consequence analyze the causes that culminated in the First World War it would be useful and helpful to make the distinction between the short-term causes and the long-term causes of the war. As it is later being clear, the immediate cause of the war, the assassination of the heir of the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand, was nothing but the spark of the disastrous war whose real reasons for occurring had started long before.
Delving into history, and studying the sequence of events that antedate the First World War, one can get the feeling that its origins lie behind individual’s or whole nations’ desire of being independent as well as expanding the country’s boarders and increasing economic and political power as much as possible. The start of the causes that affected the outbreak of the war dates back to the period where Bismarck, a highly intelligent and skillful Minister, ruled Germany. ... His aim was attained after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) when actually Bismarck managed to seize the regions of Alsace and Lorraine from France, a great loss for her. ... Also he wanted to impede the forming of an alliance between France and Russia, which could result in Bismarck’s most fearful dream, of having to fight a war on two fronts. ... The Italians wanted an ally against France (the reasons for this are explained later) as well as an alliance, which would prevent a potential war with Austria-Hungary due to territorial rivalries. ... Kaiser adopted a more aggressive attitude and wanted to render Germany not only a European power but also a world power by conquering more territories and increasing its naval and economic power.
