Jonathan Swift wrote about things that were immoral in society and like many other writers he would try to find a solution to the problem. Because of his writing style Swift is considered a satirist. Swift use's diction, irony, and appeals to capture the reader's attention and make the point known. In A Modest Proposal we see the use of all three as a strategy of persuasive writing. Diction is an effective way of persuasive writing because it finds its way into the readers mind and stays their throughout the story. For example, when he writes "a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled" captures the reader's attention because of the manner Swift uses to express his words. He proposes the idea of putting a price on innocent children and serving them for food to help begin with the solution of poverty.
