Songs Of War The “Star-Spangled Banner” by Francis-Scott Key is a song written during a battle for American independence in 1814 and was to be later known as America’s National Anthem. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written in tribute to Abraham Lincoln by James Weldon. Though both songs were written at different and for different reasons, Johnson and Key show common similarities with the use of imagery, figurative language, and symbols. In the “Star-Spangled Banner”, Key uses imagery to aid in appealing to the senses. For instance, “And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,” (line 15-16), appeals to the reader’s senses by giving a visual image of what was taking place during the battle.
