On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany. Hitler's promises of peace, honor, and justice invigorated the hopes of Germans who had suffered through World War I. Hitler began many programs to rejuvenate German to its former glory. But this was not meant to be. In 1923, Germany was in big trouble. France and Belgium sent troops to Germany. Hitler saw an opportunity amid these troubles to overthrow the German and Bavarian governments. Hitler founded a private army called the storm troopers. He planned to send 2,000 storm troopers headed by German General Erich F.W. Ludendorff against the governments.
