The Jewish holiday of Passover has begun, and as the holiday is observed here in the city and around the world, security remains a major concern. Starting with the traditional Seder meal on the first or first two nights, the eight-day Passover festival commemorates the exodus of the Jews from slavery in Egypt about 3,000 years ago. One of the traditional foods for Passover is the unleavened bread matzah, recalling the Bible story that the Jews did not have enough time to allow their bread to rise before leaving Egypt. The holiday also brings heightened security around New York City, with the Police Department increasing patrols in predominantly Jewish areas and keeping a closer watch on synagogues.
