Water Situation in Rajasthan and Gujarat

Water Situation in Gujarat and Rajasthan: Two projects with SEEDS and SOHARD

During my internship in India I worked together with two NGOs, namely Social Action for Human Development (SOHARD) in Alwar district/Rajasthan and the Sustainable and Environmental Ecological Society (SEEDS) in Porbandar district/Gujarat. My fields of interest mainly focused on the aspects of women empowerment in local-self-government, on the preservation and extension of recent drinking water facilities and the disaster management of earthquakes and cyclones in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
In the first section of this paper, I will give a short overview of the current water situation in both states. ... I will also depict my personal experience with both partner organizations and their engagement in the fields of disaster mitigation and water sanitation projects. ...
Gujarat and Rajasthan can be seen as representatives for a couple of other Indian states, whose general problem are the unstable climatic conditions. ... They can also lead to cyclones at the coastline of Gujarat or to long-lasting droughts especially in Northern Gujarat and major parts of Rajasthan. Although natural circumstances are the main reason for this problem, there is evidence that the increasing desertification of large areas in Western Rajasthan and the permanent decline of the average ground water level in Western India are mainly caused by human influence.

SOHARD
In the last two decades, many NGOs like SOHARD and others attempted to build up drinking water facilities to fight against diseases linked to polluted water. ... Their aim is to promote the importance of hygiene behaviour and to create a certain awareness of how important the use of clean water is for human health.
