Fuel cell vehicles have the power to change the world. Fuel cells will soon replace the internal combustion engine in a car with a clean, quiet, pollution-free fuel cell engine. Fuel cell-powered cars look just like other cars on the road today. However, they are cleaner, quieter, more efficient, and work very differently. Using fuel cell vehicles would be a good thing to use as an alternative transportation fuel. Pound for pound, hydrogen contains three times more energy than gasoline. That is one of the reasons why it is a superior fuel. Unlike fossil fuels, earth will never run out of hydrogen. Renewable energies such as solar or wind power of hydroelectric would ensure a much cleaner production of hydrogen than using traditional sources of electricity from coal or nuclear power. Where did fuel cells come from? The first fuel cell was built in 1839 by Sir William Grove, a Welsh judge and gentleman scientist. Serious interest in the fuel cell as a practical generator did not begin until the 1960s, when the U.S. space program chose fuel cells over riskier nuclear power and more expensive solar energy.
