myth of education
Education and Individual Opportunity Throughout “Savage Inequalities” references are made to the value of quality versus quantity with respect to public education. The author, Jonathan Kozol, believes that despite the fact a large percentage of America’s youth are being educated, the quality of education seen in the suburbs drastically differs from the level of academic instruction seen within the inner cities. Therefore, Kozol’s novel accurately portrays education’s inability to overcome financial adversity. Within the United States, education not only serves as the foundation for an individual’s academic success, but provides children with the means to excel socially and economically as well. Unfortunately, the lack of equality within the American education system fails to provide children of the inner cities with the skills necessary to become productive members of society.
