Midgett, C and Trafton, P. (2001). Learning through problems: A powerful approach to teaching mathematics [Electronic version]. Teaching Children Mathematics, 7 (9), 532-536. For my article review, I chose to read from the journal Teaching Children Mathematics. The article Learning through Problems: a Powerful Approach to Teaching Mathematics discusses placing problem solving at the center of teaching and learning. This article states that students should “build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving.” By doing this, problem solving will become a vehicle by which students make sense of mathematics. In this article, a fourth grade teacher wrote the following problem on the board: “Three people want to share two sticks of gum equally.
