Given that Gorge Orwell’s nineteen eighty four is ostensibly set in 1984 it has no meaning for a contemporary reader. ... In fact there are fewer totalitarian governments today than there were when the book was published. The year 1984 has passed without any of his dire warnings coming true. ... Judged in this way, Orwell’s nineteen eighty four will always be relevant to any society. ... The dangers of abusing power were present in the past, are present today, and will be present in the future. ... He shows the reader the perils of power, aiming to warn the reader of what power can lead to, not for specifically for the year 1984 but for all time. ... Today its not just totalitarian governments who refer to their enemies as terrorists and their friends as freedom fighters. All governments manipulate language and it’s probably because Orwell’s warnings have turned out in many ways to be accurate, doublespeak and newspeak are easily recognized today just by turning on the news.
