Is the government of Oceania going to be a reality in the future? The government of Oceania uses children, language, work, the media, trickery, war, and violence, to control its citizens in “1984.” The government is known as the Party and the leader is known as Big Brother. Everybody should love Big Brother and those who do not, are punished. In “1984” a telescreen is always watching you and the thought of committing thought crime scares people. Propaganda is the main reason to blame. The Party uses propaganda to control the citizens of Oceania. The main way they did this was through the media, which always exaggerates the truth. They say the chocolate ration has increased but in reality it might have gotten decreased. The media tricks people without them knowing it. The media would also announce what was happening in the war and sometimes Oceania’s opponent would get changed. Everybody had access to the media because it was on the telescreen daily. Another type of propaganda is through the use of posters. The Party has huge posters of Big Brother that says Big Brother is watching you. This reminds people that they are always being watched. The Party also hangs up posters of the enemy for people to hate.
