Delillos white noise system of power
In the novel “White Noise” by author Don Delillo the characters are governed by a system of power that replaces their own decision ability. ... When the media cannot guide them in decision-making situations, they are left with nothing but with white noise. The characters in the novel are governed by false systems of power. The creation of idols out of celebrities in the text allows the characters to assume the same power that their heroes possess in their own lives. ... The old man needs this to feel like there is a system of power in place so that he may feel associated with something. The celebrities within the system of power suggest that the characters follow a new guidance, that of the media. ... In the novel, whenever there is no media present and whenever there is no celebrity guidance, all that is left to be in charger of them is white noise. Whenever there is nothing to guide any of the characters in making a decision, they remain with white noise. ... The sirens are a form of white noise, covering all other sounds around. ... And when they are not there to guide them, the characters are left to figure it out on their own with the white noise. ... When all else fails, the characters, left with white noise, take comfort in it and try to find another situation to be in.
