Living as Aliens and Exiles
1 Peter 2:11
“Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. ...
Everywhere the New Testament insists that Christians are resident aliens and exiles in the world. ...
Michelle Hershberger in the book, A Christian View of Hospitality, makes three observations about aliens. ... Aliens are less demanding and harder workers. ... And with lowered expectations aliens are happier and more thankful, when they do get something. ... Aliens look ahead, they dont look back. ... As a result Aliens are about building a new and better future, they arent about holding on to a dying past. ... Aliens dont get too comfortable where they are. Aliens know that their goods could be taken from them at any time. ... That is how we are called to live, as aliens. ... If we live according to the worldly standards then we are going against the Lord’s will, so we have to live apart from the world, making us aliens and exiles.
There is another aspect of aliens and exiles that should be addressed as well. ... They are the aliens and exiles who are seeking a homeland and dont know where to find it. ... They may be the aliens and strangers seeking a homeland but that are not to be aliens and strangers to us (Horst, 2003). ... Love him as yourself for you were aliens in Egypt. ... We are aliens in the world, but in the same way, the world is aliens to us. ... If we live as aliens to this sinful world then God will be glorified.
If we were to truly live as aliens and exiles in the present culture, there would be such a great change in society. ... If we truly lived as aliens, no one could say that about us.
