Children with FAS have an average IQ of 65. The “normal” IQ of an average person without FAS is 100. They are usually shorter and weigh less then other kids their age. Sometimes it may be difficult to tell if the infant has FAS. Some babies are born with “Fetal Alcohol Effect”, or FAE, which is less severe then FAS. FAE means the baby is born with only some of the symptoms of FAS. Being a parent of a child with FAS is very difficult. They lose weight after they are born; they have poor sucking reflexes, meaning they do not reach for food like most babies do. Sometimes they do not even have the desire to eat at all.
