Plan for a Time of Reconstruction
In finding a plan that was perfect for America at the time of Reconstruction, one must study the plans of Johnson and that of the Republicans. My plan includes some details from both of their plans and also brings in a few new ideas. Since Americans were divided among the issue of what to do with the South and the slaves, and ultimately the Reconstruction process failed, it is fair to say that neither plan could have actually worked. ... I needed to formulate a plan that would satisfy both sides of the controversy. ... First, they would need to declare their secession illegal and swear allegiance to the Union, the same as in Johnson’s plan. ... Blacks would never have to accept any job and could quit at any time, just like any white person. ... The North has been doing so well as an industrial center, and I think that the South could do well given some time. ... Above I have stated the terms of my plan. This plan would be the best for America at the time because it satisfies both the North and the South, and also the Radicals and those who favored Johnson. ... This leads me to the controversy between Johnson’s plan and that of the Radicals Republicans.
