Das Urteil- Franz Kafka

Section A- Commentary for Das Urteil Das Urteil can be split up into 2 parts; with Georg’s reminiscence of the friend in Russia as the first, and the scene with the father as the second. This passage comes precisely at the beginning of the second part, where George intends to inform the father of his friend. As he enters the room, he is struck by the gloominess of the room, as a means of start the conversation; he addresses this to the father, who contradicts back. Through the remoteness of their relationship, a clear conflict can thus be seen between the father and the son. Nevertheless it is interesting to see how the father’s appearance brings back George’s childhood memory, whom Georg still regards as being a powerful figure. The passage can be divided into 2 parts and it involves 2 characters- the father and the son. The first part is a narrative of George’s observation of the room’s surroundings and the father. The second part is a direct result from an aspect of Georg’s observation-the darkness of the room, which forms the dialogue between the two. The narrative is very descriptively written but biased, in the way that it is solely based on the account of Georgs, his critical and evaluative opinions are emphasised by a consistent use of modal particles . The narrative is constructed in short sentences, as if Georg has noticed several objects in the room at the same time but does not have enough time to describe them in lengthy details.
