Should Levi-Strauss & Co. Continue Their Business in China? What purpose would it serve for an American business such as Levi Strauss to continue in China? ... Some human rights activists think that China has been marred by systematic violations of fundamental rights, and at the same time…in massive need of support in reaching its development and modernization goals. Other activists think that socially responsible corporations should remain and act as a progressive force or divest and withdraw. I feel Levi-Strauss & Co. should withdraw from China because the Chinese government would use the presence of reputable companies to boost its image and maintain its grip on power. ... Some activists feel that human rights advances have not accompanied development and growth in Southern China’s special economic zones. Some believe that if America had a presence in China actively engaged with the Chinese economy, we would be helping to create power structures outside government and state industries. They stress the dangers of isolating China, arguing that constructive engagement could contribute to human rights improvements. In South China, people had become free to start their own businesses, to change jobs at will, and to talk and travel. ... I feel that it would be a start, but the People’s Republic of China’s culture is so entrenched in their ideology of Buddhism and communism, an evolution to bring them into more democratic thinking and practice will take time and creative planning and much, much money. ... One of the stakeholders that would be affected if Levi-Strauss & Co. pulled out of China is the Chinese people. ... I feel the cost of withdrawing would be recouped in the long run because of all the stumbling blocks that are innately found in China. ... How could the business, Levi-Strauss & Co. ...
