What is Research? “Research, like poetry, cannot be defined in a manner that is universally acceptable.” (Furnas 2) This is because research can be applied in hundreds of ways. Particular industries use research differently in order to personally achieve what information they are searching for. Likewise, individual people personalize their research for the same purpose. However, all research performed has similar characteristics and a similar goal. Dictionary.com provides two definitions for research. The first describes research to be a verb and states that to research is “to study (something) thoroughly so as to present in a detailed, accurate manner.” The second describes research as a noun and states that research is “scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry.” This refers more to the actual findings All research performed, whether it is marketing research or research performed in order to determine a particular purchase to make, begins with a question or problem (Leedy and Ormrod 4).
