Working With the Elderly What is Service-Learning? Service-learning is something that combines service to the community with ways for students to learn and it benefits both the student and the community. In many community organizations, students are able to improve the service that is given to the elderly and they can help to meet important human needs. For students, community service is an opportunity to explore careers or majors. It gives them a sense of responsibility and teaches them about commitment and dedication to human service. It also provides students with opportunities to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real life situations that may be present in their own communities and to expand what is taught in school by offering learning beyond the classroom and into society.
